 Residency and studio complex
The Ne'na Contemporary Art Space international residency program offers artists an opportunity to execute site specific projects which engage with and utilize the local culture of Northern Thailand. The residency offers the artist the opportunity to develop their practice by implementing contemporary concepts and approaches in a new and culturally specific context. The residency operates through the grounds of the Monfai Cultural Center, which has been the 30 year project of Rampad Kothkaew to conserve and preserve the vanishing remnants of the traditional art and crafts, lifestyle and architecture of the Lanna people. At Monfai, artists can engage with the traditional culture of Northern Thailand as well as the network of artists, performers, artisans and craftspeople in Chiangmai who are involved in the activities of the cultural center. Additionally, there is a staff of assistants who are able to help the visiting artists practically in executing large scale projects, while they can also share their knowledge of traditional art and craft techniques. The facilities include a self-contained open plan studio and living space, approximately - m2, with good natural and artificial light. It encompasses a small kitchen equipped with cooking facilities, a private bathroom, bed room, internet connection, a TV and furniture. A washing machine is provided. Access to fax, photocopier, computers and email are also available at Monfai's office. Some basic tools can be borrowed, however visiting artists are responsible for providing their own tools and materials.
